A Few of My Favorite Things

Recently, while attending a writer’s workshop, we were asked to make a list of our favorite things. Supposedly, this is one of those introspective exercises that will make me a better writer. We’ll see about that, but even if it doesn’t, it was an interesting exercise.
The first section asked us to list our three favorite fiction books. Tough choices but here they are:
Harry Potter (entire series) - Rowling
Lord of the Rings - Tolkien
Lonesome Dove - McMurtry
The next section asked about two favorite non-fiction books.
A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bryson
Disappearing Spoon - Kean
Next, we were asked about our three favorite places and two one-word reasons for our choices:
Victor, Idaho – Ribs and trout fishing
Paris, France – Romance and wine
National Seashore near Provincetown MA – Beach and pubs
Then the questionnaire moved to movies. Again, only the top three.
Harry Potter (entire series)
Midnight in Paris
Love Actually
Finally, we were asked to name our top three non-intimate activities. In no particular order, I listed:
Softball
Fly fishing
Cross-country Skiing
Then our answers were entered into some sort of computerized fortune teller and this is what it spit out about me:
“Clearly, you are a person who enjoys a good tale, has a passing interest in science and the techy world, puts a high priority on food and drink, and loves to play. You are likely still clinging to your childhood. In your writing efforts, you should focus upon story-telling and adventure yarns.”
Hmm, I think I can live with that.
